SOPA Backlash – Solidarity by the faceless many
Vendetta against Internet Control
The fast pace of events occurring over the last 72 hours compels me to update the last post “NDAA Tyranny now backed by ‘Internet Kill Switch’ (SOPA/PIPA)”
The backlash against the proposed S.O.P.A and P.I.P.A bills has been incredible.
People are angry, and they ain’t gonna take it any more.
Last Wednesday 18-Jan-2012, up to 115,000 websites including Google, Wikipedia and WordPress altered their web-pages or ‘Went Dark’ as a protest to the introduction of the the SOPA & PIPA Bills.
As mainstream media failed to cover the issues properly, it was not until the public … … actually went online themselves and noticed the ‘blackout’ that they became aware of the impropriety being carried out by the Obama Administration.
Suddenly, people started calling and emailing their congressmen.
On Friday, in an apparently ill-timed exercise, U.S. Law enforcers shut down the alleged piracy-collusion website WWW.MEGAUPLOAD.COM. Arrests of MegaUpload’s six operators and founders occurred in Hong Kong and New Zealand. MegaUpload’s primary function is to allow subscribers and the public to store and download archived files, many of which include copyright movies, music, software etc. Of its own accord, MegaUpload has accounted for up to 4% of the entire internet traffic, and its value is upwards of 500 Million Dollars. Many MegaUploader subscribers were left in the lurch by these arrests.
The banner below is what appears when web-surfers try to open to MegaUpload.com.
In a strategic counter-move to the MegaUpload arrests, the SOPA Bills and the NDAA legislation, the hacktivist organisation known as “Anonymous” (pictured Top Right wearing the Guy Fawkes’ masks) launched the most massive cyber DoS (Denial of Service) attacks in history on numerous ‘establishment’ websites such as those of the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) etc.
The campaign carried out by thousands of operatives of the loose-knit ‘Anonymous’ organisation was called #OpMegaupload campaign. This caused the government’s websites to become inaccessible. Some of these websites were shutdown from normal access less than 70 minutes after the MegaUpload arrests announcement.
The backdown response by the U.S. congress was swift indeed. Within 36 hours, congress announced it would shelve the SOPA and PIPA Bills indefinitely. Approximately 65 congressional votes in support dropped down to less than 35 in a matter of hours.
The extent of the public’s disdain against supporters of the SOPA bill was also shown by thousands of registered users of GoDaddy.com (a large internet Domain Name Registrar) cancelled their internet accounts because of GoDaddy’s support for the SOPA bill.
‘Anonymous’ spokesmen vows to continue causing havoc to government sites. The #OpMegaUpload operation will lay the groundwork for another cyber attack mission, going under the banner of #OpDonkeyPunch.
Another strategy being used by ‘Anonymous’ is to name and shame congressmen who have voted in support of SOPA and NDAA legislation. Even releasing personal details of addresses and contact numbers of those congressional representatives. See, for example, the personal publicizing of kickback details such as lawmaker Senator Robert J Portman of OHIO.
War not over
Whilst, technically, this congressional backdown on SOPA / PIPA might suggest a victory for the ‘Anonymous’ organisation, the government enforcement officials who shut down MegaUpload.com, in fact did so entirely without the help of the SOPA legislation, but using other already existing Laws. The mind boggles as to how much power would be available to the FBI if SOPA were actually enacted.
Much of the furore over SOPA is that it isn’t just about Stopping Online Piracy. It is also about the government’s subversive and expanding control of other information transmitted across the Internet.
Moreover, it is about the whole corrupt process of congressional lobbying in favour of unpopular bills (including other anti-libertarian laws legislation like NDAA). Many congressmen have been receiving huge financial kickbacks in order for them to vote in favour of SOPA. (See the comment from an Infowars.com forum below)
libertycowgirl says: January 21, 2012 at 5:01 pm Here is a list of Congressional politicians in favor of the bill known as SOPA and PIPA and the amounts of money they received from the SOPA backers who bought their favor in voting yes for both bills. The Winners are: Money Received from Pipa Sponsors: Sen. Charles Schumer [D, NY] $864,265 Sen. Harry Reid [D, NV] $665,420 Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand [D, NY] $556,525 Sen. These are the political whores who took money, to support the most damaging bills that would put control of the global internet into the hands of the Hollywood directors. Get the money out of politics. Vote out these people is the one way to clean house and clean out the corruption out of this government.
The Wider Agenda
Whilst alternative news sources such as www.rt.com (Russia Television in America) concentrate on the actions of ‘Anonymous’ acting as counter-strategists to government control, other agitator alternative media websites like Alex Jones in www.prisonplanet.com and www.infowars.com point to a more sinister and pervasive agenda.
The crucial point to be made about this attack on civil liberties by various laws like the U.S. Patriot Act, the NDAA, and bills like SOPA & PIPA seems to be that there is a relentless attack by corporate and vested interests against basic rights afforded by the U.S. Constitution, its Amendments and the Bill of Rights.
In the long history of Law, even minor and purported alterations to these primary stalwarts of Democracy, for the alleged purpose of governmental or corporate control or benefit end up eroding human rights, and setting the foundations for different forms of tyranny.
The opinion / position I express here is NOT just a “purist’s” viewpoint. It is something that interferes with the human entitlements of every man woman and child in so-called democratic societies.
This is why it is so stultifying and gob-smacking that NONE of these issues discussed above are properly reported or commented upon by the mainstream media. Concerned citizens like myself are therefore forced to turn to alternate sources for our news and information. If you only watched FOX, CNN, NINEMSN, NBC News, you might be forgiven for thinking we had nothing more important to be concerned about than what Lady Gaga is wearing this month.
Fighting the Dumbass Mindset
These same mainstream ‘media presstitutes’ , and purveyors of the ‘Mindset of Ignorance’ are the same ones who barely register the slightest interest in such things as the virtual sodomizing of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights by Obama over the last few weeks with his signing into law the NDAA legislation on New Years Eve.
These are also the same media who foist upon the public the idea that Newt Gingrich, who had to cancel his South Carolina rallies due to ‘lack of attendance’ WON the G.O.P Primary Republican vote whilst civil libertarian Ron Paul had thousands at his own rally.
Just in case you don’t fully understand it, let me fill you in better on NDAA. Then you can decide for yourself whether You Yourself are lost in the matrix.
The NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) is, as you will recall, (in the guise of what is, on its face, a periodic budgeting statute) suddenly appears with provisions to allow for such things as;
- arrest of civilians, anywhere in the world,
- … for expressing free speech, free press, or right to civil protest
- … without notification of charges (i.e. on mere suspicion),
- … to whisk such prisoners overseas outside U.S. (so they can apply Military, rather than National Laws),
- … no right to question any evidence presented,
- … no right to due process or legal representation or right to jury trial because it is a military tribunal,
- … presumably there will be torture involved since they will be in a military prison (like Abu Ghraib in Baghdad, or Guantanamo Bay in Cuba), so no accountability for prisoners safety or welfare there,
- … to be detained indefinitely since the Act says ‘to be held until the “War on Terror” is ended’,
With the NDAA, There is now no need for the president to even make a formal declaration of Martial Law. It is technically already in-place. Obama has effectively declared the U.S. Homeland to be a “Battlefield”, and the citizens themselves to be the enemy.
This affects people worldwide including You and Me. Particularly if the sycophantic track record of the Australian Government is anything to go by with its recent allowing of U.S. Troops to set up base on Australian soil.
So how do you like them apples, Dear Reader? Still think that you are in control of what is being fed to you every day?
These are the facts as I see them. Comments by naysayers appreciated.
